Temple Chai Board of Directors

Alan Spalter, President

Alan, along with being on the Board of Directors at Temple Chai, is the chair of the Barness Center for Tzedakah and Social Justice, a board member of Council for Jews With Special Needs, and the president of Retail Assistance Corporation. Alan and his wife Tracy have two children, Andrew and Matthew.

Brad Weintraub, VP of Education

Brad has been a Temple Chai member since 1988 and was elected to the board in 2005. Brad and his wife, Lori, have two children, Andrew and Allie. Brad is the General Manager of Specialized Office Systems, a printing, office supplies, and promotional products company here in Phoenix.

Beth Crandell

Beth is starting her second year on the Board of Directors as Board Liaison for Facility and Art and is also on the board of the Jewish Federation and a member of the World Affairs Council. She has taught art in the Paradise Valley School District for several years and is currently getting certification for teaching English as a Second Language. Beth has two children Zachary and Anika.

Ginette Daniels

Ginette Daniels, a native New Yorker who spent time in Los Angeles before relocating to Arizona, started her professional life as a college French teacher but switched to a career in advertising, communications and entertainment publicity. She has held such positions at HBO, Nissan and a number of advertising and public relations firms. Currently she manages an in-house Creative Services agency for APS. Ginette has been an active member of Temple Chai for close to 10 years, participating in a number of adult education programs where she has now begun to teach, as well as singing in the Choir and serving as lay leader for the Shacharit service.

Barbara Shapiro

Barbara serves the board as a member with the responsibility of being the liaison to our Childhood Center. She has been a 2nd grade Judaica teacher for several years, and also teaches the Madrichim Training course to 8th grade students. When not at temple, she acts as a consultant to schools on a variety of topics including classroom management, discipline, and teaching strategies. Barbara works during the week in her husband Burton’s physicians’ office and has two children, Sarah and Stevie. Barbara enjoys writing short stories in her spare time. She feels that Temple Chai is her home away from home and it provides her with a wonderful sense of community.


 
Marilyn Starrett, Immediate Past President

Marilyn has been an active member of Temple Chai for many years, serving on several committees and actively engaged in Adult learning. She has worked closely with our entire youth department and has volunteered as the nurse for youth group events and Camp Swift for over 20 years. Marilyn also sings and plays guitar, and is leading the Shabbat and Me program with the Early Childhood Center. Marilyn and her husband Michael have two daughters and a son-in-law,  Emily, Jennifer and Eldad.
 

 

Ginny Keller

Ginny Keller has been a therapist here in Phoenix for 25 years. Over the years, she has become increasingly interested and involved with the Jewish community. She has been a congregant at Temple Chai for about 20 years. She occasionally has the honor of leading Friday night services, and is passionate about the role of music in prayer. Ginny is very involved with Adult Jewish learning and along with with her years of study at Temple Chai, attends the Shalom Hartman Institute Lay Leadership Retreats in Jerusalem most summers, and the Global Beit Midrash over the winters. She is Mom to three children and two grandsons.

 

 
Deborah Mislove

Deborah Mislove

Deborah, her husband Joe and daughters Lauren and Leah  have been Temple Chai members since 1998. Originally from Milwaukee, she moved to Phoenix from Chicago. Deborah is an interior designer and recently joined the Ethan Allen design team in Scottsdale. Along with temple and family activities, she enjoys her two standard poodles, Beau and Sidney, mentoring with Big Brother Big Sisters, volunteering with Free Arts, Arizona Poodle Rescue, her book club, yoga and spinning.

 

Nora Perlmutter
Past Temple Chai President Nora Perlmutter (left) is an at-large member of the URJ’s national Board of Trustees. Nora is the first Temple Chai member (to our knowledge) to serve on the national board. Nora has just completed a four-year term on the national board and has been nominated for a second term. Nora also serves on the Pacific Southwest Council regional board.

Gil Rosen
Gil Rosen is also an at-large member of the URJ’s national Board of Trustees. Gil also serves as regional MUM (Maintenance of Union Membership) Chair, where he reviews and coordinates the dues paid by the 85 temples in the Pacific Southwest Council region.

Harriet Rosen
We are proud that we will soon have a third member on the URJ’s national Board of Trustees, as Gil’s wife Harriet Rosen has been nominated to serve as an at-large member. Harriet’s nomination to the national Board recognizes her years of service to the URJ. Harriet’s election is expected in November 2005 at the General Assembly at the National Biennial in Houston.

Randi Sherman
Randi Sherman

Randi Friedel Sherman, originally from Omaha, has resided in the Phoenix area since 1980. She taught elementary school for 10 years and has been deeply involved with the Jewish community ever since her arrival to Phoenix. She's the proud mother of Lyndsi,  and Mathew, and is happy to give back to her temple community by, once again,  serving on the board of directors.
 

Toni Smeltzer
Toni Smeltzer is a vice president of the URJ Pacific Southwest Council Regional Board and a board member of the URJ Southwest Regional Outreach Council.
