Our History

The Chai-Paradise project began in 2002. Under the leadership of Rabbi Bill Berk of Temple Chai and Pastor Kelly Bender of the United Methodist Church of Paradise Valley, the group joined to begin a dialogue between the two faiths. Members from both congregations formed a steering committee to promote a a number of successful interfaith symposiums and projects. In 2005 members of the Islamic Center of the Northeast Valley were invited to join, thus completing the trilogy of faiths fathered by Abraham: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The name of this trialogue was then appropriately changed to Salaam-Chai-Paradise, translated as Peace-Life-Paradise, to reflect the new participants.

The first major Tri-Faith event in Spring 2005 was a four-part symposium based on the book, Abraham. A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths by Bruce Feiler, which discussed Abraham from the point of view of each of the traditions.
